Mitchell's last-second bucket pushed Elkers over Rams

February 6, 2013

Josh Mitchell is mobbed by teammates and fans alike after hitting the game-winning shot for Ridgway in a 44-42 victory over Johnsonburg Tuesday night. Mitchell had 14 points for the Elkers in the win.

Ridgway senior Josh Mitchell wasn't interested in playing an overtime period against Johnsonburg.
Mitchell hit a left-handed scoop shot with one second left in the fourth quarter to give Ridgway a 44-42 win over Johnsonburg Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
After a near turnover, Ridgway inbounded the ball with six seconds remaining. Mitchell caught the ball near the 3-point and then drove to his left, hitting a short underhanded scoop shot to put the Elkers ahead by two and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
"It was to go to Jesse. Obviously, I knew they were going to guard Jesse," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "When he popped out, we passed it into Josh Mitchell. The last instructions coming off the bench were "If Jesse's not open, don't force it.' Somebody has to go to the basket. They were so overloaded to Jesse and to Sam on the inside. Josh took the seam that he had and he went to the basket and made a tough shot. He went to his left, it set up for him. I can't take any credit for that, it was just luck of the draw. He got the seam, took it and made a nice shot."
