Michael J. Gelsick

Michael J. Gelsick, 82, formerly of Wilcox, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, in the Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys.
He was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Rasselas, son of the late Peter and Katherine Gomola Gelsick.
He was a 1946 graduate of Wilcox High School and was a lifelong resident of the Rasselas-Wilcox area. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army in the occupational forces in Japan. He had been employed for more than 40 years at Penntech Papers in Johnsonburg, retiring in 1992. In 1950, he was drafted by the St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinals, and he was a lifelong sports fan.
He was a member of the St. Anne's Catholic Church, the Wilcox American Legion, and the Wilcox Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and farmer, and he loved working on the Gelsick family farm, which he did for many years. He also enjoyed year-round hunting and was well known in the area for his own recipe for venison sausage.
He is survived by two daughters, Susanne (Richard) Bright of Smethport and Robin (James) Vito of Kane; by a son, Michael (Lucy) Gelsick of Johnsonburg; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Frank, Joseph, Edward and Paul Gelsick, and a grandson, Jeremy Owen Vito.
Funeral services for Michael J. Gelsick will be held on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg, with the Rev. Don Varwin officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Rasselas.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Members are asked to assemble at the funeral home on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
Friends will be received at the Ubel Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
