Mass mailer concerns residents

March 6, 2012

A mass letter mailed to Ridgway area residents claiming water service coverage to homeowners is causing concern.
Ridgway Borough Manager Martin Schuller is advising residents to be wary of a letter from HomeServe USA.
Schuller says he is not advising residents to use or not to use the service, but to read the fine print before making any decisions.
"They are sending out a brochure stating that they will fix your waterline if it breaks from your curb box into the house," Schuller said. "As a borough we can't endorse it or say if it's good or bad. We advise people to read the fine print on the letter itself. I don't want to advise people that they shouldn't do it, but i don't think it's necessary."
The letter invites residents to accept "Water Service Line Coverage" for $4.99 a month to help protect against the costs associated with covered repairs or replacement of a leasing or broken exterior water service line on a resident's property.
The monthly payment claims to provide the customer with up to $6,000 in annual coverage.
