Mary Lou Eckert, age 85, a resident of Baton Rouge, La. died on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at Sunrise Assisted Living of Baton Rouge.
Lou was a loving and dedicated mother who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Lou was born in Lancaster County and grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. and Bradford where she graduated from Bradford High School. In her youth, Lou enjoyed fishing with her parents, playing golf, skiing and ice skating. She was an accomplished figure skater and enjoyed pairs skating. Lou earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. and was a proud alumnus. Lou's passion was art. Her paintings were exhibited throughout the South. She won awards in juried shows, had paintings in private collection and was included in Who's Who in American Art. Lou was co-owner and later sole proprietor of Two Plus Two Ltd. Art Gallery in New Orleans, La. for 20 years. Lou enjoyed volunteering her time to various art organizations with the latest being the Elk County Council on the Arts. She had an infectious smile and beautiful blue eyes.
Lou was preceded in death by her parents; Russell A. and Bessie M. Keck, her husband Frank E. Eckert Jr.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Tim Zimmerman, a son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Virginia Eckert; five grandchildren, Courtney Psenik, Tyler McLellan, Matt McLellan, Jeffrey Eckert and Steven Eckert; step-grandchildren, Annie Bechtel, Jed Zimmerman, Drew Zimmerman and Kayla Marie Cobble and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mary Lou Eckert will be held on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Donald D. Hake, former pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Thayer Memorial Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
