Mary Hackett Hayes
Mary Hackett Hayes, 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at her residence within the Marion Center, Garvey Manor in Hollidaysburg, ending a 10-year ordeal with Alzheimer’s. To her very last day, she demonstrated strength, dignity and character, remarked by all who knew and cared for her. Mary was born Nov. 24, 1928 in Reynoldsville. She spent her childhood in Ridgway and summers in Driftwood. She graduated from Ridgway Centennial High School in 1946 with her future husband.She married Clifford Raymond Hayes in 1952 and moved to Pittsburgh to begin a new life. In 1954, Mary, with her husband and child, relocated to Altoona and later in 1959, established the family home of 46 years on Cedar Street, Sylvan Hills in Hollidaysburg. Through this time, Mary maintained an active life, raising her children to adulthood, supporting her husband’s architectural career and partnership and traveling avidly around the world, through their married years. Mary was renowned for her style in clothing, elegant manners, graciousness as a host, industrious knitting, tireless cookie making, especially at Christmas time, and avid reading. She demonstrated a quiet grace in all things.Mary is survived by her five children, Rebecca Hayes Rose, Cynthia Hayes Karcher, James Harold Hayes, David Scott Hayes and Richard Raymond Hayes; their spouses, Adam Rose, Richard Karcher Sr., Monica Hayes and Louisa Hayes; her eight grandchildren, Richard Karcher Jr., Stephanie Karcher, Brittany Karcher Miller, Jacqueline Hayes Robertson, Sarah Hayes, Caroline Hayes, Eric Bishop Hayes and Trevor Hackett Hayes; her sister, Ruth Hackett Fehrenbach; a sister-in-law, Beverly Hayes Henry; and several nieces and nephews from the Hayes and Hackett family lines, co-residents and loving staff of caregivers at the Marion Center.Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Clifford Raymond Hayes; her parents, Florence MacDonald Hackett and John Vincent Hackett; and four of five siblings, Florence, John Donald and James.A celebratory gathering and Mass for Mary Hackett Hayes will be at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively on Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lakemont. A family and friends reception will follow at the Allegro Restaurant in Altoona.
