Lady Tide overwhelm Ramettes in 14-run output

May 11, 2011

Johnsonburg starting shortstop Justis Myers makes a break for second base Wednesday behind Curwensville starting first baseman Katie Wriglesworth.

JOHNSONBURG – Confident from a one-run loss earlier this season to Curwensville, the Ramettes were unable to replicate that effort in a 14-3 five-inning loss Wednesday at Knothole Recreational Park.
Johnsonburg previously succumbed in a 7-6 contest earlier this year to the Lady Tide but it was all Curwensville Wednesday afternoon under sunny skies in Paper City.
A leadoff triple from Taylor Goodman led to the visitors' first run as Tiffany Carter stroked a single to plate Goodman. In the top of the second inning, Michelle Wriglesworth scored on a throwing error at third base on a groundout for the 2-0 lead.
Up to that point, the game was closely contested but the floodgates opened in the top of the third inning at Curwensville sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs for the 14-0 lead against Johnsonburg starting pitcher Paige DeCecchis.
An error at first base allowed Goodman to reach safely and an infield single by Madison Peterson put two aboard. A triple from Tiffany Carter brought in Goodman and Peterson for a 4-0 lead. After a popup to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, Cheyenne Pentz poked a single to score courtesy runner Abby Dugo to go up 5-0. Back-to-back doubles from Michelle Wriglesworth and Katie Wriglesworth brought in two more runs, and a subsequent single from Hannah Bressler plated Katie Wriglesworth for an 8-0 advantage.
Consecutive fielding errors allowed Abby Johnson to reach safely and move two runners into scoring position. They would later score on Goodman's second triple of the day for a 10-0 lead. Peterson followed with a single to plate to bring in Goodman from third for an 11-0 lead.
After Carter tagged a double, three consecutive singles from Molly Demchak, Pentz and Michelle Wriglesworth gave the Lady Tide 14 runs. A sacrifice fly to left field by Katie Wriglesworth sent Pentz to third base but she was stranded after Bressler hit a flyout to right field for the last out of the top of the third inning.
Kiana Myers scored the Ramettes' first run in the bottom of the third inning as Dani Jo Dwyer came in. Dwyer reached base on a walk, one of three passed out by Curwensville hurler Tierra Shope. Kiana Myers stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Justis Myers then brought her home with an RBI-groundout to cut the lead to 14-2.
Kiana Myers then relieved DeCecchis and faced just seven batters in the next two innings, allowing only a one-out single to Demchak in the top of the fifth inning.
Brittany Watts opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to center field but Dwyer and Kiana Myers both struck out. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Carter in the catcher's position allowed Watts to reach second base. A passed ball sent her to third and an infield single from Justis Myers cut the lead to 14-3 before a flyout to second base ended the game.
"There's not much comment for this game because it wasn't the best game that we had, probably one of the worst that we've played," said Johnsonburg head softball coach Mellisa Myers. "Our defense has always kept us in games but certainly not this one.
"We went to Curwensville and lost by only one run so I expected more from us. It was the same pitcher but we just didn't hit and I just don't think that we were into it [Wednesday].
"We have excellent fielders but we had a lot of errors in the outfield and the infield, and it just wasn't our day."
