BROCKWAY – Despite only registering two hits Monday evening, the Brockway Lady Rovers took an 8-1 win over visiting Ridgway in the first round of the Class A District 9 playoffs.
Ridgway starting pitcher Taylor Roseto allowed only two hits, both in the bottom of the third inning: an infield single on a bunt by Ann Moyer and a single to score two runs by mound opponent Alex Wright.
But the walks and errors hurt the Lady Elkers as 15 runners reached on either an error, walk or hit batsman.
The Lady Elkers took advantage of an early Brockway miscue as Melissa Wehler reached safely after a fielding error at second base.
Wehler later scored on a single down the left field line by Ashley Viglione for the early 1-0 lead but consecutive groundouts stranded two runners to end the inning.
With Roseto in the pitcher's circle, the freshman mixed strikeouts with walks and appeared poised to escape the inning unscathed before a slow roller to second base led to a low throw.
Moyer stroked an offering to second base and after a low throw to first base escaped Morgan Herzing's grasp and ricocheted off the fence, Zoe Hawkins and courtesy runner Brittany Johnson scored for the 2-1 advantage. Leeann Crawford would later cross the plate to extend the lead to 3-1.
After a scoreless second inning that saw Roseto catch two Brockway batters swinging, the Lady Rovers used another big inning to push the lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, the first two batters reached on walks before the bunt single by Moyer that died in the dirt.
With the bases loaded, Jackie Brosky drew a free pass as Johnson scored for a 4-1 lead. After pinch hitter Brooke Carlson struck out swinging, Roseto beaned Sara Guilyard to bring in Crawford to extend the lead to four runs.
From there, Wright recorded a one-out single to score Moyer and Jackie Brosky for a 7-1 lead. Roseto would strike out Hawkins and get a 5-3 groundout from Jalina Sabatose to end the inning.
The Lady Elkers couldn't come up with any runs in the top half of the fourth inning but the hosts added another in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
An error at second base allowed Savannah Brosky to reach safely and Johnson came in as a courtesy runner; After a walk to Crawford, Johnson scored her third run of the game, this time off a groundout from Moyer. A strikeout by Hailey Adams and foulout to first base by Guilyard ended the inning.
The teams battled the next two-and-a-half innings but no one could get any runs across the plate.
The Lady Elkers got two aboard in the top of the fifth thanks to consecutive infield singles from Wehler and Brianna Stenta but the runners were stranded thanks to a bases-loaded groundout.
Consecutive 1-3 groundouts back to the pitcher set the tone in the top of the sixth inning and courtesy runner Jill Gaio was tagged with the third out of the inning trying to advance to third base after a two-out single from Jenni Thomas, who finished 2-for-3 on the day.
Wehler connected for a one-out single to right field in the top of the seventh inning before Stenta struck out looking. After Viglione reached on an error at third base, Sydney Kovalyak hit into a 1-3 groundout to end the game.
"We gave up two big innings and that's frustrating when we outhit them 10-2," said Ridgway head softball coach Gary Gerber II following the first-round loss. "We just couldn't get the one hit when we needed it and we had runners on base the entire game, we just couldn't get that two-out hit, especially early in the game.
"Had we pulled through early, I think that would've helped our mentality in the later innings."
Wehler was 2-for-3 on the day and scored the team's only run. Thomas also had two hits while Breezy Mazur, Sydney Kovalyak, Stenta and Viglione each had singles.
"I'm proud of our players and we had a good season where we never gave up," Gerber II said. "If this was a few years ago, we more than likely would lose a game against a team like Brockway by 10 runs. I'm proud of our efforts and how far we've progressed.
"We got down [Monday] but we never gave up and it all came down basically to two big innings and a few mental mistakes running and fielding."
