Lady Elkers win season finale

May 16, 2012

Morgan Herzing slides into second base during a 13-1 win for Ridgway softball.

Ridgway softball didn't wait on good pitches to hit and weren't waiting to build a big lead.
The Lady Elkers scored 10 runs in the first inning and were not threatened in a 13-1, 5-inning victory over Sheffield Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway's season finale.
"They came out swinging," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "Everybody up and down the lineup came out swinging. We jumped out ahead of them and Taylor did the rest."
Jenni Thomas and Sydney Kovalyak each singled to lead off the game. Both runners came around to score on a Melissa Wehler double for a 2-0 lead. Ashley Viglione reached on a Sheffield error which scored Wehler for a 3-0 lead. Sam Kovalyak singled to score Viglione from second and Morgan Herzing followed with a single to score Sam Kovalyak.
Taylor Roseto reached on an error which scored Herzing. Emily Spiers reached on a fielder's choice and Jenna Hoffman reached on an error. Thomas singled in her second at bat off the inning. Both Spiers and Hoffman scored on wild pitches which brought the lead to 8-0. Sydney Kovalyak singled home Thomas in her second at bat of the inning. Wehler singled and later was driven home on a Viglione single for a 10-0 Ridgway lead in the first inning.
After Sheffield added a run in the second, Hoffman walked with two outs and later scored as Thomas reached on an error. Sierra Kos also added a run in the second inning as she courtesy ran for Roseto, as she singled.
Thomas added another RBI in the fourth with a single to score Spiers and a 13-1 lead. Thomas was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Sydney Kovalyak, Wehler and Spiers each had two hits while Viglione finished with three stolen bases.
Sheffield's lone run came in the second as Sami Pollock walked with the bases loaded, scoring Hannah Vile who had both hits.
"They got one run on a walk and the same girl had two hits," Gerber II said.
Roseto also had a strong day in the pitcher's circle as she had 11 of 15 possible outs via the strikeout.
The Lady Elkers finished the season with three wins in its last four games. This was the last game for Ridgway's five seniors, Sydney Kovalyak, Sam Kovalyak, Melissa Wehler, Morgan Herzing and Ashley Viglione.
"It's a good way for the seniors to go out on top with a victory," Gerber II said. "All five of them have been here all four years. They've been teaching our younger kids how to do it, how to hustle, how to play the game, how to want to play the game. Every one of them wanted to be here every day."
