May 11, 2011

Morgan Herzing winds up for a pitch during action for the Lady Elkers against Curwensville.

Ridgway softball lost 12-2 in six innings to DuBois Central Catholic on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway scored its runs in the home half of the fourth inning with the Lady Cardinals leading 7-0. Bri Stenta led off the inning with a triple to right center field, she scored on a subsequent single from Ashley Viglione for Ridgway’s first run. Sam Kovalyak also followed with a single. After two outs were made on a fielder’s choice and popout, Taylor Roseto singled to plate Viglione.
DCC opened the game strong and scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Lauresa Gulvas was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and went on to steal second base. Gulvas would score from there on a single from Kylee Schaffer. Katlyn Yebernetsky singled home Shaffer to put the lead to 2-0.
DCC would extend the lead in the third with two more runs. Tricia Varacallo walked with one out and Yebernetsky doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Taylor Thomas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alyssa Marchioni hit into a fielder’s choice with a forceout at home but a Ridgway error allowed Yebernetsky to score from second and put the lead to 4-0. A walk from Juliana Ingham loaded the bases and Megan Hassan walked to bring around courtesy runner Ashlyn Nugent.
"You have to give them credit, they hit the ball and we weren't making the plays," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "It just wears out the pitchers. Her job is to throw it. I think we got down early and against a good team like this, you can't get down early. It's tough to come back."
Gulvas and Schaffer walked to lead off the fourth inning for the Lady Cardinals, Gulvas would score on an infield hit from Yebernetsky. Thomas singled home Yebernetsky to make the lead 7-0 as the Lady Cardinals racked up three in the fourth.
Defensive errors hurt Ridgway in the fifth inning. Hassan walked to lead off the inning and after a strikeout, Hassan scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Gulvas. Schaffer reached on another Ridgway error to score Gulvas and make the lead 9-2. Thomas singled to plate Schaffer and make the lead 10-2.
"Defensive errors, on a hot day, you don't want to wear your pitcher out," Gerber II said. "I thought we hit the ball OK."
In the sixth, a 2-run single from Yebernetsky scored both Hassan and Kayla Bittner.
Stenta and Viglione were both 2-for-3 for Ridgway, Sam Kovalyak, Sydney Kovalyak and Roseto each also had singles. Viglione and Roseto each had one RBI. Jenna Hoffman was 0-for-1 and walked twice.
Hassan walked four times for the Lady Cardinals. Yebernetsky was 4-for-5 with four RBI, a double and two runs scored.
