Lady Dutch volleyball downs Johnsonburg 3-1
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team defeated the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 3-1 score Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.St. Marys won the first set by a 25-21 score. They took the second set by a 25-18 score. Johnsonburg won the third set by a 25-21 score. The Lady Dutch won the match by taking the fourth set by a 25-22 score.The first set was a close affair early on, as St. Marys gradually built an 11-8 lead. With Kiana Hoohuli serving, St. Marys moved out to a 16-8 lead. Brittney Tarle had two kills in that stretch and Hoohuli recorded one ace. St. Marys moved out to a 24-14 lead before Johnsonburg got the serve back. With Chelsea Benson serving, the Ramettes closed to 24-21. Benson had two aces and Brittany Watts recorded a block during that span. St. Marys would win the set 25-21.Johnsonburg went up 2-1 in the second set. St. Marys got the serve back. With Lena Hanes serving, St. Marys went up 5-2. Hanes had two aces and Taylor Bellina recorded a kill. The teams traded sideouts. The Lady Dutch got the serve back, leading 13-9 on a kill by Bellina. With Tarle serving, St. Marys went up 18-9. Tarle had two aces and Bellina had a block. The Ramettes got the serve back on a kill by Watts. With the Lady Dutch leading 19-11, Johnsonburg got the serve back with Allyson Wheeler serving. Benson had two blocks to cut the St. Marys lead to 19-13. St. Marys got the serve back, leading 20-13. They would maintain the seven-point lead to win 25-18.The third set was a back-and-forth affair. Johnsonburg got the serve with the score tied at 13. With Watts serving, Johnsonburg went up 18-13. The Lady Dutch got the serve back, trailing 18-14. With Hanes serving, St. Marys took a 19-18 lead. Hanes had four aces and Bellina recorded a kill. Johnsonburg tied the set at 19. With Raimi Akers serving, the Ramettes with up 22-19. Benson had a kill in that run. Johnsonburg went on to win the set 25-21.The fourth set saw the Ramettes open an 8-4 lead. St. Marys battled back and closed to within one, 15-14, on a kill by Kristen Anderson. With Bellina serving, St. Marys tied the set at 15. A kill by Kayla Nussbaum gave St. Marys an 18-15 lead. The set was tied at 20-20 with Nussbaum serving. She recorded a kill and Hoohuli scored on a tip. St. Marys hit the ball out of bounds, 22-21. The teams traded sideouts, 23-21. With Hoohuli serving, Hanes got a block. A block by Watts gave the serve back to the Ramettes. The serve went into the net as St. Marys won 25-22.“Tonight’s game ball went to Kayla Nussbaum for her passing, while Lena (Hanes) played consistent, Jolene (Young) passed well and Brittney (Tarle) had some awesome blocks,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.“In the third set we tried a new offense sets and didn’t fare too well with them. But we’ll take the win,” she added.The Lady Dutch were led by Lena Hanes with 11 service points and four kills. Kiana Hoohuli had eight service points and seven kills, while Brittney Tarle had three blocks, four kills and four service points.The Ramettes were led by Brittany Watts with six kills and six service points along with three blocks. Chelsea Benson had seven service points and three blocks, while Emilee DeMay had five service points.“We’re not a very good volleyball team. We have no chemistry on the floor and no leaders on the floor. It was ugly volleyball by us,” said Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey. “St. Marys played well. They set the ball well, passed well and hit well. But we’ll get better. It’s a long season,” added Shuey.St. Marys won the junior varsity match 2-0.St. Marys, now 2-3 on the season, will travel to Bradford on Thursday. The junior varsity match is set for a 6 p.m. start, with the varsity to follow.Johnsonburg is now 2-2 on the season and will host Kane on Thursday. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
