Lady Dutch softball defeats Ridgway, 9-0

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 5-2 on the season with a 9-0 victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers.
The game was played at Benzinger Park due to unplayable conditions at the SMAHS field.
St. Marys used a five-run, four-hit first inning to take charge of the contest.
“We hit the ball well today but they (Ridgway) played well defensively,” said St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge. “We made good contact today.”
“Our girls played a good defensive game with no errors. Rachel (Ginther) pitched a good game and Hayley (McGowan) had a good game behind the plate,” said Gerarge.
St. Marys had eight hits in the contest, with Erica Sorg leading the way with a double and a single. McGowan had a triple, while Kali Quagliani had two singles. Cassie Wonderling, Kelsey Fritz and Mia Keener also singled.
Bri Stenta led Ridgway with a double and a single. Erica Thorwart and Melissa Wehler each singled.
“We played much better today,” said Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II. “They (St. Marys) only had one or two hits after the first inning.”
“What a difference from yesterday to today. We were much better. We’re coming along and cutting down on mental mistakes,” added Gerber.
Rachel Ginther went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up four hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out 11. Morgan Herzing went the distance for Ridgway, giving up eight hits in six innings, walking five and striking out two.
After a leadoff single by Erica Thorwart in the top half of the first, Ridgway went down in order. In the home half of the inning, Erica Sorg reached base on an error. She stole second before Kali Quagliani singled, sending Sorg to third. Quagliani stole second. An infield out scored Sorg, and a triple by Hayley McGowan scored Quagliani. With two outs, Savanah Krivonyak walked. A single by Cassie Wonderling scored both McGowan and Krivonyak. A single by Kelsey Fritz scored Wonderling, giving the Lady Dutch the 5-0 lead.
The second inning found Ridgway going down in order, while the Lady Dutch stranded a runner. The third inning was a 1-2-3 inning for the Lady Elkers. Mandy Gerarge led off the home half of the inning with a walk. She stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. She was able to score on a passed ball and St. Marys took a 6-0 lead.
Wehler led off the fourth with a single for Ridgway. She stole second, with Bri Stenta getting an infield hit for Ridgway. Wehler was caught stealing third as Ridgway stranded a runner. The Lady Dutch left a runner on base in their half of the inning.
Ridgway left a runner on base in the fifth, while St. Marys went down in order.
Stenta doubled with two outs in the sixth for Ridgway, but was left stranded. Taylor Bellina led off the home half of the inning with a walk. She stole second and moved to third on an infield out. A single by Mia Keener scored Bellina. A double by Sorg scored Keener. Quagliani singled, scoring Sorg as St. Marys took a 9-0 lead.
Ridgway went down in order as SMA’s Morgan Lovenduski made a shoe-top catch in left field to end the game.
The Lady Dutch travel to Benzinger Park this afternoon to take on the Elk Catholic Lady Crusaders in a game set for 4:15 p.m. The junior varsity contest will follow the varsity game.
Ridgway hosts Brockway at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.
