ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team evened their record at 1-1 as they defeated the Bradford Lady Owls by a 9-0 score in a match played at Benzinger Park Tuesday afternoon.
Elk Catholic will play host to the Brockway Lady Rovers this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Benzinger Park.
“Today we opened our District 9 season with a win over a good, but young, Bradford squad,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
At first singles, ECC’s Abby Meyer defeated Emily Hardy 6-0, 6-4.
At second singles, Loreal Housler of Elk Catholic beat Amina Sosic 6-1, 6-2.
Laira Reuscher of ECC defeated Colleen Douglas 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.
At fourth singles, Maria Gismondi of the Lady Crusaders defeated Zowe Orczeck 6-1, 6-0.
Kristin Dippold of the Lady Crusaders beat Alyssa McGrew 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles.
“The number one singles match was the most exciting contest of the day, with Abby Meyer earning a hard-fought victory over Emily Hardy in straight sets. The second set went back and forth, but Abby hung tough for the win,” said Meier. “Loreal Housler also played very good tennis in her win at number two singles. Loreal seems to improve every time she steps on the court, and once again she played a great match.
“We continue to get some valuable experience at the remaining singles positions, as Laira Reuscher, Maria Gismondi and Kristin Dippold all played really well today. These three young ladies are playing good tennis and their matches are fun to watch.”
All the Elk Catholic doubles teams won by 8-0 scores. Loreal Housler and Abby Meyer won at first doubles, Sophie Herzing and Abby Wittman won at second doubles, Maura Keyes and Maria Gismondi won at third doubles and Maddie O’Leary and Kathryn Ordiway won at fourth doubles.
“We were successful in each of our four doubles matches, as all of our doubles teams worked well together and played good team tennis. And once again, we were very successful in our exhibition matches, as all of our newer players played well,” said Meier.
In exhibition doubles matches, Natalie Reichard and Linnea Stager won 6-1, Marla Scacchitti and Rachel Stauffer won 6-0, Megan McKenna and Danielle Healy won 6-1, Anna Wingard and Rebecca Gleixner won 6-4 and Rachel Rupprecht and Quirin Riddle won 6-0.
Prior to the start of the match, ECC’s Kathryn Ordiway sang the national anthem as both teams stood at attention facing the flag at Benzinger Park. “Kathryn has a beautiful voice and it was a really nice way to start the match,” Meier said.
“It was a great way to start our D-9 season. Our team played well and I’m proud of the girls,” he added.
