January 13, 2013

Elk Catholic's Taylor DaCanal, 12, scores two of her game high 15 points on this play as she drives the baseline during the second half of Saturday night's game against St. Marys Area played at the ECCHS gym.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders raised their District 9 League record to 2-1 with a 39-32 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
After the Lady Dutch had taken a 20-17 halftime lead, the Lady Crusaders went on a 12-0 run to open a 32-20 lead with 4:42 left in the third period. The Lady Dutch responded with a 6-0 run of their own to close out the period but Elk outscored St. Marys 7-4 in the fourth quarter to win the game.
"I was happy with the way we played on the defensive side of the ball, holding them (St. Marys) to 32 points," said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. "We're still struggling on the offensive side right now. We play well in some stretches, then we play sloppy.
"The full-court pressure tonight in the second half got us some better looks offensively," said Pistner. "We need to improve from the foul line.
"Overall I am happy with the win," he added, noting that his squad hosts Curwensville Wednesday night.
The Lady Crusaders were led offensively by Taylor DaCanal with 15 points on seven field goals and a one-for-three night from the foul line. Kristy Hanes and Kirstie Wehler each added eight points.
