Lady Crusaders defeat Ramettes in five innings

May 1, 2012

Brittany Watts gets ready to swing at a pitch for the Johnsonburg softball as the Ramettes took on Elk County Catholic.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader girls' softball team recorded a 12-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes in a five-inning game played on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
"I'm really happy with it (the game) today," said Johnsonburg coach Jenny Lewis. "I think we showed a lot of improvement since last game. We lost 20-0 last game, and to come out and almost play a whole game [where we] had several hits, different girls on base, [and] we scored a run, we're coming along."
Taylor Schlimm went the distance for ECC, giving up two hits and striking out eight.
Alexa Marciniak worked the mound for Johnsonburg, giving up eight hits and walking five.
ECC had eight hits in the contest and were led offensively by Taylor DaCanal with a three-run triple and Jessie Ginther with a two-run triple. Sierra Meyer recorded a pair of singles, while Michelle Imbrogno, Taylor Schlimm, Rachel Stauffer, and Maddy Schneider all singled.
The Ramettes had two hits on singles by Kiana Myers and McKenna Rowles.
After Johnsonburg's batters went down in order in the top of the first inning, Jessie Ginther walked to reach base for ECC. Michelle Imbrogno also walked, and after reaching first kept going toward second. With Johnsonburg's infield focused on getting Imbrogno out, Ginther was able to score and give the Lady Crusaders an early 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the second inning.
With two outs in the top of the third, Johnsonburg's McKenna Rowles singled but was left stranded at first. In the bottom of the inning the Lady Crusaders extended their lead by scoring three more runs. Imbrogno singled but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice that saw Kristy Hanes reach base. Taylor Schlimm also singled and Lyndsey Trumbull was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Taylor DaCanal scored all three with a triple, making ECC's lead 4-0.
The Lady Rams again went down in order in the top of the fourth and the Lady Crusaders sealed their victory by recording eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Ginther made it all the way to third on an error and scored as Imbrogno reached base on an error on the shortstop. Hanes and Schlimm both walked to load the bases. With one out, DaCanal flied out to right field, which allowed Imbrogno to score. A single by Rachel Stauffer scored both Hanes and Schlimm, and Stauffer then scored on a single by Maddy Schneider. Sierra Meyer also singled, giving ECC a pair of base runners, and both she and Schneider scored on a triple by Ginther. Ginther scored the final run for the Lady Crusaders on an error that saw Imbrogno reach base. A fielder's choice by Hanes saw Mackenzie Neureiter, pinch running for Imbrogno, out at second to end the inning with ECC up 12-0.
Johnsonburg's Kiana Myers started off the fifth inning with a single and scored the Lady Rams' lone run on an error that allowed Cassie Biondi to reach first. The next three batters went down in order, making the final score 12-1 in favor of ECC.
The Lady Crusaders are now 11-1 on the season while the Ramettes are 1-11. Johnsonburg will host the Brockway Lady Rovers on Thursday in a contest scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Both teams will be back in action on Friday for the Elk County Tournament in Ridgway.
