Summer intern and St. Marys native Sara Krug enjoys her work directing summer youth programs for the Elk County Council on the Arts [ECCOTA].
A sophomore at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Sara is the daughter of St. Marys residents Steve and Helen Krug.
"I am one of the interns here at ECCOTA and I worked here last summer," Krug said. "I was in charge of coming up with a theme for this summer so I chose the theme 'Out of the Box,' because of a show called 'Out of the Box,' but I put it more in the theme of kids expressing themselves by going out of the box to explore all of the different fields of art."
The first program to take place this summer will be a summer theater camp based on the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" to be held from June 2-6 at the Ridgway Area High School directed by Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary Teacher Jason Phipps.
"He [Phipps] puts together an entire show within five days which is mind blowing because he pulls it all together and the kids really enjoy this week of performance and acting on stage," Krug said. "We really encourage everyone from the area to come and support them."
Anyone in third grade to age 18 can take part in the theater camp.
The performance will be held on June 6 at 7 p.m. in the Ridgway Area High School.
From June 18 to 22 children can enjoy a week of fun and expressive art projects in a Visual Arts Camp held at the Ridgway Social Hall. As part of the camp participants will tour the Erie Art Museum.
"We are going to have a balloon artist as a guest coming on Friday [June 22]," Krug said. "We are going to be focusing on optical illusions and the kids are going to be making their own supplies and paints and other things. The kids will really enjoy themselves and it will allow them to explore their own creativity and individuality with those forms of visual arts."
Following the Visual Arts Camp will be the Anything Art Show to be held July 9-13 for artists age 18 and under at the ECCOTA Gallery along Main Street in Ridgway.
"Kids can come and bring three pieces of artwork into the gallery," Krug said. "We will display it and then have judges come in to judge the artwork. This allows the kids to show off their artwork for everyone to see."
