Kristy Hanes runner-up in D9-AA Girls' Golf Championship

October 1, 2012

ECC's Kristy Hanes placed second in Monday's District 9-AA girls' golf championship at Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville. With her runner-up finish, Hanes qualifies for the PIAA Class AA Western Regional set for Oct. 15 at Tom's Run Country Club in Blairsville.

BROOKVILLE – For the second year in a row, Elk County Catholic High School's Kristy Hanes finished in the runner-up spot among the Class AA golfers in the District 9 Girls' Golf Championship, three strokes behind the leader.
The scenario was unfortunately a familiar one for Hanes, who tied for second last year with Union's Larissa Roberts while coming in three strokes behind Redbank Valley's Samantha Dinger.
In this year's event, which was held at Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville, Hanes carded an 88 on the day, while Keystone's Amber Hess shot an 85 to take the title.
Hanes' finish also leaves ECC with a pair of District runners-up as Elliott Struble came in second in the boys' event on Saturday.
Coming in third on Monday was Kane's Kyla Hoag with a 92, and rounding out the top four golfers who will advance to the Western Regional at Tom's Run Country Club on Monday, Oct. 15 was Oswayo Valley's Bailey Kemp with a 98.
Twenty-four golfers from 16 schools participated in the competition. In addition to ECC, Kane, Keystone, and Oswayo Valley, other schools fielding participants were A-C Valley, Brockway, Brookville, Cameron County, Clarion, Cranberry, Curwensville, Port Allegany, Ridgway, Smethport, Redbank Valley, and Moniteau.
Among the other area competitions, Kane's Ellie Tunall finished with a 145, while Ridgway golfers Logan Feronti and Samantha Caroline shot a 139 and a 226, respectively.
Four teams competed for the AA team title, with the Brookville foursome of Elaina Powell, Kelsey Heinrich, Kacey Osborne, and Kirsten Gordon winning the tile with a score of 494. Coming in second was Cameron County with a score of 501. Third was the Kane foursome of Hoag, Tunall, Sarah Szymanski, and Megan Durante with a score of 502. A-C Valley came in fourth with a score of 510.
In the AAA competition, only the top qualifier-- Bradford's Kate Colella, who carded an 84-- will advance to the Western Regional at Tom's Run. Coming in second was Clearfield's Jordan Lehman with a 93, followed by Punxsutawney's Lauren Giavedoni with a 99.
While Bradford, Clearfield, DuBois, and Punxsutawney all fielded golfers in the individual competition, only Bradford and Punxsy competed for the AAA team title. The Punxsy foursome of Caroline Dunkel, Audrianna Delacour, Giavedoni, and Sarah London finished in first place with a score of 466, while Bradford's foursome ended the day with a score of 477.
