Joseph F. Spowal

Joseph F. Spowal, 83, of Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road, Johnsonburg, died early Tuesday morning, May 22, 2012 following a brief illness at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot.
He was born May 19, 1929 in Pittsburgh, son of the late Giacomo "Jack" and Theresa Stoudt Spowal.
On Nov. 21, 1970 in Johnsonburg, he married Cecilia Marrone, she survives.
He had resided in Johnsonburg since 1974, formerly of Gibsonia and Smethport.
He graduated from Connelly High School in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg Senior Center, Prince of Piedmont Club and the Singing Dutchmen.
He was a self-employed meat cutter in Pittsburgh and as a meat cutter for the Market Basket, Comet Market and Nelson's Grocery in Johnsonburg. He also had worked for Airco Carbon for 14 years, retiring in 1994.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Joseph F. Spowal Jr. and his wife Tyna of Johnsonburg; a brother, Jacob S. Spowal and his wife Dolly of Zelienople; a sister, Margaret "Marge" Hurka of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bernard and Herman Spowal.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph F. Spowal will be conducted at the Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, on May 25, 2012 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. David J. Wilson officiating. Interment will be held at the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home at 401 Chestnut St. in Johnsonburg, Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
