Johnsonburg tennis loses opener to ECC, 7-2
JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams started their 2012 season Tuesday on the tennis courts but came away with a disappointing 7-2 loss against visiting Elk County Catholic."It's not the start we hoped for but ECC is a good team," Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber said following the loss. "We found out what we need to work on and improve."In the first singles match, ECC's Ben Wortman won 6-1, 6-3 over John Paul Allegretto; at No. 2 singles, Johnsonburg's Mason Martonik outlasted Shane Mancuso, 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 (third set tiebreaker); at No. 3 singles, ECC's Drew Meyer won 6-2, 6-1 over Shane Bickford; at No. 4 singles, ECC's Scott Reichard won 6-4, 6-1 over Nate Field; at No. 5 singles, ECC's Aaron Meier won 6-1, 6-4 over Tommy Imbrogno.In doubles action, the Rams got on the board as Allegretto/Martonik won 9-7 over Meier/Meyer; at No. 2 doubles, ECC's Herzing/Krellner won 8-1 over Bickford/Field; at No. 3 doubles, ECC's Alan Brennen/Brian Nguyen won 8-5 over Imbrogno and Mason Walters; at No. 4 doubles, ECC's Cole Gerber/Brent Polaski won 12-10 over Christian Cherry and Jeff Mann."Mason Martonik played an outstanding match with the lone singles win," coach Dauber said. "Mason [Martonik] is probably the most talented player I have, and when he played consistently, he will be tough to beat."We have some new faces getting valuable experience and it should pay off by the end of the season. We're home again Thursday and we get another chance at it, and I expect some better results."Johnsonburg is scheduled to host Bradford for a 3:30 p.m. match on Thursday.
