JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg softball swept a doubleheader with Sheffield Thursday at Knothole Area Recreational Park.
The Ramettes won 13-12 in eight innings then followed up with a 19-0 win in three innings.
"They really were doing well at hitting," Johnsonburg coach Melissa Myers said. "Our girls were coming around. That's what I've been wanting to see them do. We had a couple errors in the first game, I think that's what kept the game close. You try to work all the girls in and give them a chance. We stuck with it and pulled through."
In Game 1, Johnsonburg earned the deciding run in a back-and-forth game. The Ramettes led 12-11 entering the seventh inning but the Lady Wolverines were able to push a run across to tie the game. Dani Dwyer walked to lead off the inning and Justis Myers singled to move Dwyer to third. Myers then moved to second on an overthrow. A groundball from Taylor Harvey scored Dwyer to win the game for Johnsonburg.
Sheffield took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Johnsonburg scored twice in the opening frame. Brittany Watts singled and then stole second base. Dwyer singled to score Watts to tie the game. Myers reached on a 2-base error from Sheffield and Dwyer would eventually score on a wild pitch.
Sheffield scored three times in the second inning before the Ramettes took the lead back with a 5-run frame in the home half. Tommi Wildnauer hit a bunt single and went to third on a Sheffield throwing error. Kiersten Sallack was hit by a pitch and Paige DeCecchis reached on a bunt single, scoring Wildnauer for Johnsonburg's first run of the inning. Watts reached on a fielder's choice and Sallack scored to tie the game on the play. Myers doubled home both Watts and DeCecchis, then she scored on a dropped third strike and a poor throw to first base.
The Ramettes added a run in the fourth as Dwyer walked and scored on a stolen base.
Sheffield then roared back in the sixth inning with seven runs to take an 11-8 lead. The Ramettes responded again with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Watts had a 1-out single and Dwyer followed with a single of her own. Watts scored on the throw into the infield. Dwyer would later score in the inning. Harvey walked with two outs and Elena Solorio singled home a pair of runs to put the Ramettes ahead.
Dwyer had four runs scored in the first game, she was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and three stolen bases. Watts, Myers and Wildnauer each had two hits for Johnsonburg.
After the first game, Johnsonburg took advantage of 14 Sheffield walks issued to quickly build up a lead. Johnsonburg scored twice in the first inning as Dwyer doubled and scored from second on a sacrifice fly. Myers reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Ramettes sent 15 batters to the plate in a 10-run second inning. Johnsonburg walked nine times. Kate Galsick had a 2-run single in the third inning to score Wildnauer and Cassie Biondi, one highlight of a 7-run third to put the game away after three innings.
Coach Myers said the duo of DeCecchis and Kiana Myers throughout Thursday was a help.
"Paige did a fine job in the first game and we brought Kiana in and pitched her the three innings in the second game," coach Myers said. "I think it does a pitcher good to get a bit of a rest like that."
Johnsonburg softball is scheduled to travel to Northern Potter next Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. start.
