Johnsonburg has many Halloween festivities in the itinerary for the upcoming weekend. On Saturday, October 29, the annual Halloween parade is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Registration for those entering in the parade begins at 3:30 p.m. and runs till 4 p.m. Those in the parade are beginning lineup at 4:30 p.m. in the Cherry Square Mall parking lot. The parade will travel down Market Street and end at the Johnsonburg Community Center where judging of the costumes will take place.
In addition to the parade, there will be a pumpkin decorating contest. This is a new event. Participants are to drop their pumpkins off between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the community center on Saturday. Judging will be based on four age categories. Later, trick or treating is scheduled to follow the parade from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. by porch light invitation only.
The Halloween activities are sponsored by the Johnsonburg Recreation Board, Johnsonburg Rotary and the Johnsonburg Chamber of Commerce. Staff member of the community center, Chris Bressler says the parade has been more than 25 years in the making.
“I remember 25 years ago when my kids were little and it’s been going on way before that,” Bressler said. “And when I was a kid it was a big deal to be in the Halloween parade.”
Bressler explains how the festivities are a good way to bring the community together.
“It is nice because it is a community event,” said Bressler. “It brings everyone out and they get to see all of the neat costumes.”
Not only does the parade give the community something fun to attend, it also sparks their creativity measures.
“It is really neat to see all of the costumes,” Bressler said. “It is amazing how creative they are.”
