James Vincent "GG" Christoff, 89, a resident of Fairview Manor in Erie and formerly of 520 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie.
He was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Ridgway, son of the late Chester and Lena Piccirillo Christoff. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Leo's High School, Class of 1941. He was also a graduate of the DuBois Business College.
On June 5, 1947, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Dorothy Vollmer, who survives.
He was an employee of the former Kantar's Store in St. Marys and Port Allegany, was the owner of the former Deb Shoppe in St. Marys and retired in 1989 from the Dickinson Mental Health Center.
Mr. Christoff was a member of the Queen of the World Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 489th Battalion in the South Pacific for three years in WWII, was a 50-year member of the St. Marys Lions Club, a member of the K. of C., the DuBois DAV, former member of the Elk County Assessment Board, former member of the St. Marys Zoning Board and a former member of the Ridgway Drum and Bugle Corps.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a daughter, Connie Garrison (John) of Erie; two sons, James Christoff (Diane) of Syracuse, N.Y., and Michael Christoff of Treasure Lake; eight grandchildren, Broderick Christoff, Emily House, Stephanie Shreve, Michelle Johnson, James Garrison, Sean Garrison, Morgan Garrison and Joshua Garrison; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille Unick of Cleveland, Ohio and Dolores (Dee Dee) Westphal of Erie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Dagustine; and by three brothers, William, Samuel and Chester Christoff.
A Mass of Christian Burial for James Vincent "GG" Christoff will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at noon, with the Rev. Michael Ferrick, pastor, officiating.
Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.
Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 from 5-8 p.m.
