Helen M. Detwiler
Helen M. Detwiler, 97, formerly of Johnsonburg and Kane, died Monday evening, Sept. 24, 2012 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.Born July 8, 1915 in Johnsonburg, she was the daughter of John and Bessie Detwiler. She attended college at Penn State and in Indiana, Pa., and was employed as a teacher and counselor for many years for the Johnsonburg School District, retiring in 1976. Miss Detwiler was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kane and was a volunteer at the Friends' Memorial Public Library in Kane. She was an avid Penn State, Steelers and Pitt football fan, and traveled extensively after her retirement.Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Edward and William Peterson, both of Kane, and Judy Phillips of High Point, N.C.; plus several great nieces and nephews, including her caregiver, Tammy Swanson of Kane. Several great great nieces and nephews also survive.She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by a sister and four brothers.Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home in Kane, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. W. Craig Smith, pastor of the Mt. Jewett - Hazel Hurst United Methodist Churches, officiating.
