Helen Dixon Hughes

Helen Dixon Hughes, 85, of 219 Euclid Ave., Ridgway, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 19, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness. She was born July 22, 1926 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Clark and Bertha (Nagle) Dixon. She married Donald R. Hughes on June 10, 1950 in St. Leo Catholic Church; he preceded her in death.
She had resided in Ridgway for most of her life and was a graduate of the Ridgway High School and a graduate of Cedar Crest College in Allentown. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, had organized the Good Samaritan Food Bank, was a board member with the Elk County Historical Society, a board member of the Ridgway Cemetery Association, and a genealogy researcher for the Elk County Historical Society.
Helen is survived by one daughter, Kim N. Lindhard and her husband Robert of Thailand; two sons, Kurt D. Hughes of Putney, Vt. and Cory D. Hughes and his wife Janet of Matthews, N.C.; three grandchildren, Ryan D. Hughes, Cameron and Kenna Hughes; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gunnar C. Hughes; and two sisters, Susan Sassman and Mary Morgan Dixon.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Dixon Hughes will be celebrated at St. Leo Catholic Church on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. Brian E. Vossler, pastor of St. Leo Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A Wake Service will be held Monday evening at 7:45 p.m. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Elk County Historical Society.
