Helen B. Swanson, formerly of Ridgway, died Sept. 9, at her daughter’s home in Chicago, Ill.
She was three days shy of her 91st birthday. Born Sept. 12, 1921, to Gustaf and Ruth (Winslow) Brumberg in Horton Township, she moved to Ridgway with her family when she was two. They were active members of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Following high school graduation, she worked for the phone company in Ridgway, and then at the Market Basket, where her father was the manager.
On May, 12, 1944, she married Richard J. Swanson, also of Ridgway, who was serving at the time in the U.S. Army. In 1946, they moved to Chicago while Richard attended North Park College and Theological Seminary. Together they served Covenant churches in Pittsburgh; Paxton, Ill.; Boston, Mass.; Galesburg, Ill.; and New Britain, Conn. Following retirement in 1986, they lived in East Dennis, Mass.
Among her many talents, Helen had a beautiful soprano voice. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook, and had a gift for making people feel welcome as she opened her home to countless friends, travelers, and visitors.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, and by two brothers, Robert and Paul Brumberg.
She is survived by her son, Jim Swanson; a daughter, Jane Swanson-Nystrom; a son-in-law, Douglas Nystrom; and three grandchildren, Helena, Anna, and Daniel Swanson-Nystrom, all of Chicago.
A memorial service was held Sept. 23 in Chicago. A service will also be held Oct. 27 in Brewster, Mass.
