Ridgway girls soccer lost 1-0 to Brookville in the first round of the District 9 Class A girls soccer playoffs at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway Tuesday afternoon.
Brookville’s lone goal came around 10 minutes into the first half. Michelle Crissman made a long run through midfield as she got by the Ridgway defense with a deft first touch to her left which gave her space to operate. Crissman could not get much on her shot and it hit the post as a result. Brookville got the rebound and the Lady Raiders looped a shot in for what would be the game’s lone goal.
Ridgway had chances throughout the game but could not finish. The Lady Elkers earned three corner kicks in the first half and had a shot go wide by Kassa Kocjancic in the last minute of the first half.
Ridgway ratcheted up the offensive pressure in the second half as the Lady Elkers switched their formation to a 4-3-3 with three forwards attacking the Brookville goal. It was working as the Lady Elkers kept most of the possession in the Brookville half of the field in the second half, forcing a pair of early corner kicks. The biggest threat came during an offensive flurry for Ridgway with 27 minutes left. Courtney Bush had three shots in a span of two minutes but Brookville goalkeeper Madi Hill was able to make clean saves on each of her shots.
“They got that one nice shot from outside right away,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “It’s a really tough loss. We changed up to a 4-3-3 to get more offense and we really gave them an offensive threat. We had chances, we just couldn’t find the back of the net. It just hurts, it really hurts.”
Maddalena said the chances were there for Ridgway’s offense. Ridgway finishes the season with the most wins in the history of the program with a 15-4 overall record.
“We had a great season, it was our best record ever,” Maddalena said. “We’ll come back next season and we’ll rebuild. We’re losing eight great seniors. They’ll be hard to replace but we have to go with it. They played a great game and they put the ball in the net. They deserved to win. It’s tough because we were the higher seed and they come here and they beat you on your home field, it hurts. It’s part of the game. You have to put the ball in the net and we didn’t do that. We had chances in the second half, we really had a lot of chances. We just couldn’t find it.”
