George P. Gasbarre, 92, of 39936 State St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2014 at the home of his son Joseph in Ridgway.
He was born March 17, 1921 in Ridgway, son of the late Louis and Columbia (Sidoni) Gasbarre.
He married Philomena Nellie A. Mann on May 28, 1946, she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1998.
He had resided in Ridgway all of his life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the K of C where he was a 4th Degree in the St. Marys Assembly, was a past Grand Knight of the Frank Servidia Council, and was a life member of the Ridgway Moose.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII having served in the European Theatre and had been in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. He had been employed by the Elliott Company for 17 years, Manno Fabricating for three years, Weyerhauser for 14 years, and Alpha Sintered Metals for six years.
George is survived by two sons, Joseph H. Gasbarre and his wife Melinda of Ridgway, and Michael P. Gasbarre and his wife Bonnie of Mechanicsburg; three grandsons, Joseph and his wife Shannon, Matthew and his wife Connie, and Benjamin; one granddaughter, Kristen; three great-grandsons, Clark, Grayson, and Spencer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by five brothers, Hugo, Gabriel, Baptist, Samuel, and Louis Gasbarre; one sister, Adeline Gasbarre; and a daughter-in-law, Connie Gasbarre.
A Mass of Christian Burial for George P. Gasbarre will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Leo Catholic Church with military rites accorded by the Ridgway Servicemen's Detail.
Officiating will be Fr. Brian E. Vossler, Pastor of St. Leo Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Ridgway Ambulance Corporation or to the Ridgway Fire Department.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Thompson Funeral Home.
