Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel
Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel, 84, of 159 Terra Cotta Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday afternoon, July 23, 2011, at Pincrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Warren, son of the late Eugene F. and Madeline Weidert Brechtel. On April 7, 1948, he married Catherine J. Rezmerski, who died June 17, 1997.Formerly of Rasselas, he was a 1944 Wilcox High School graduate and had resided in Johnsonburg since 1948. He was a World War II veteran, having served overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 27th Infantry Division and later with the 720th MP Battalion in Tokyo during the occupation of Japan.He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg American Legion Post 501, Wilcox Sportsmen's Club and the National Rifle Association. He was retired from Penntech Papers, Inc. of Johnsonburg after 43 years of service.He is survived by two sons, Wayne C. Brechtel of Ridgway, and Richard A. "Rick" Brechtel and his wife Julia of Johnsonburg; one daughter, Marsha, Mrs. Robert Calla of Johnsonburg; five grandchildren, Paul C. Brechtel, Lauren Pura, Renee Brechtel, and David and Corey Calla; eight great-grandchildren, C. Logan Brechtel, Carson and Cooper Pura, Nicklas and Parker Calla, and Gracie, Tony and Callie Jo Calla; and two half-sisters, Sandy, Mrs. Reggie Yeager of St. Marys and Sue Morris of Kane.In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Lisa Brechtel, in infancy; a sister, Eileen Brechtel; and a half-brother, Joseph Brechtel.A Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene R. Brechtel will be conducted at Holy Cross Church, Rasselas, on Wednesday, July 27, at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor. Interment will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg.Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Tuesday, July 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail.
