Eugene A. "Oscar" Kriegel

Eugene A. "Oscar" Kriegel, 88, of 10 Samsel Ave. Johnsonburg, died Tuesday afternoon, April 1, 2014 at Penn Highlands-Elk, St. Marys, following a brief illness.
He was born May 13, 1925 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Anthony C. and Gertrude Keenen Kriegel.
He married Virginia M. "Chook" Williams on Dec. 17, 1945. She died Oct. 23, 1994.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1943.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, a life member of the Johnsonburg Fire Department, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2007, the VFW, the American Legion Sophie Rood Post 501 and the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Burial Detail.
He was a WWII Navy veteran serving at sea as a Fire Controlman Third Class aboard the USS Quincy where he earned the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with two stars and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with two stars. He was a Korean War Navy Vet serving at sea as a Fire Controlman Third Class aboard the USS Strong. He also served in the Naval Reserve before being discharged Oct. 15, 1968.
He was a self-employed service station owner. From 1948 to 1951 he owned a Gulf Oil Station, and from 1952 to 1963, a Quaker State Station. From 1970 to 1980, he owned Kriegel's Keystone. He worked at Stackpole Carbon Co. for several years and Willamette Industries for 10 years before retiring in 1994. He was the Johnsonburg Borough Tax Collector for 40 years.
He also loved candle-making and the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two brothers and three sisters, Robert B. Kriegel of Whitehouse Point, Fla., L. David Kriegel and his wife Rose of Johnsonburg, Catherine L. "Kay" Brown of Erie, Sarah Neilson of Johnsonburg and Nancy C., Mrs. Gerald Chiesa of Johnsonburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, William Dean "Billy" Kriegel in 1973; a brother, Richard "Dick" Kriegel; and sisters Agnes "Ag" Mehalko and Frances G. Jackson.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene A. "Oscar" Kriegel will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg on Friday April 4 at 10 a.m. with Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Friday morning at 9:15 a.m.
