Ethnicity Festival coming to Ridgway this weekend

May 10, 2012

A festival to celebrate ethnicity will be coming to Ridgway, May 12 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Center Street. The Taste of Ethnicity Festival is courtesy of the Elk County Historical Society. The festival will offer a variety of food and music pertaining to the major ethnicities found in Elk County in the early 1800s.
“This was actually a pioneer area in the 1800s,” said Mary Kalinowski, Executive Director Elk County Historical Society. “There was nothing here until lumberman came in and ended up settling here. This brought immigrants because we had lumber, coal, and tanning just to name a few.”
The early immigrants offered a variety of heritage and the Taste of Ethnicity Festival is taking a peek into the culture associated with the different ethnicities.
“The festival is offering tasting of ethnic foods that were in Elk County,” Kalinowski said. “Admission is purchased at the door, and that includes tasting of all the different foods.”
Some foods that will be served are sauerkraut and brats, bruschetta, Swedish meatballs, Irish stew, pemmican, pierogies, Bavarian potato salad, braciole and many more.
In addition to delectable dishes there will be entertainment and exhibits. Simple Gifts, two women who play 12 different instruments will provide musical selections from the Romanian, Greek, Irish and Scottish heritage. Simple Gifts will provide a spoons workshop to anyone interested. Ross Bish will also be performing European ethnic folk songs. There will be games of chance along with items for sale in the Historical Society bookstore, exhibits in the Historical Society and an exhibit on immigrants in the Center House Museum.
The festival is still looking for vendors and volunteers. For more information call 814-776-1032.
