Elkers fall at Brookville on night of anniversary celebration

January 31, 2011

Corey Bush battles Brock Zacherl during an anticipated matchup at 119 pounds Saturday night in Brookville.

On the night of Brookville's 50th anniversary celebration, fans got a dual worthy of the occasion.
Highlighted by a 119-pound bout between two state-ranked wrestlers, Ridgway lost 42-24 at Brookville Saturday night at Brookville Area High School.
"I'm really pleased, the kids gave us everything they had," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber said.
Brookville coach Dave Klepfer said the Raiders wrestled well.
"It's definitely nice to get the win," he said. "The guys wrestled hard, it's nice to perform like that."
Corey Bush is ranked sixth at 112 pounds in the latest ranking from Off the Mat. Brock Zacherl is second in the state at 119.
Entering the 119-pound bout, Brookville had established a 33-21 lead with four matches remaining in the dual. Bush matched up with Zacherl in a highly-anticipated bout. Zacherl opened with a takedown near the end of the first period to establish an early lead. Bush came back in the second period and was able to score two back points to even the bout. Zacherl took the lead back as Bush was called for three cautions, adding a point for the Brookville wrestler. An escape from Bush tied the bout at 3-all but Zacherl scored another takedown to take a 5-3 lead. Bush escaped but Zacherl notched his third takedown of the bout to lead 7-4. Bush escaped late in the bout and had a chance to tie from the neutral position late but could not score the tying takedown.
Zacherl is 25-1 this season, Bush is now 22-1. Gerber said he wanted the matchup to happen and has the big picture of improving for the individual tournaments in mind.
"We wanted to see it," Gerber said. "You want to see how you perform against the best."
Klepfer was also pleased Zacherl had a chance to wrestle Ridgway's state placewinner from a year ago.
"We were glad it did happen," he said. "Corey wrestled a real good match for them."
The dual opened at 140 with what both coaches considered a toss-up match between Kyle Caggiano (22-3) of Ridgway and Zach Vroman (23-6) of Brookville. Vroman opened with a takedown before an escape from Caggiano put the margin to 2-1. Vroman escaped to start the second period before Caggiano scored a late takedown at the edge of the mat to tie the bout at 3-all. Late in the match, Caggiano was able to score a reversal and take a 5-3 decision over Vroman.
Dylan Zimmerman pinned Ridgway's Brett Himes at 145 in 36 seconds. Steve Mitchell (11-6) won at 152 over Ron Clark (15-5) of Brookville. After a scoreless first period, Mitchell escaped with 27 seconds left in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Clark returned the favor in the third period with an escape. Mitchell was able to wrap around Clark for a takedown, enough for a 3-1 decision.
"They got us going and the wrestlers gave 100 percent," Gerber said. "It was a great match."
D.J. Skraba of Ridgway won a 5-0 decision over Tyler Dombrowski of Brookville in the 160-pound bout. Seth Stahl won via injury default over Jacob Cieleski in a time of 1:25 in the 171-pound weight class. Jacob Shields of Brookville followed with a 34-second pin of Cortland Smith. Brookville made it two pins in a row as Logan Stout pinned Chad Quail in 2:10 to put the Raiders up 18-15.
"That was the one (215) that really got the momentum going," Klepfer said.
Jesse Sheasley pinned Mike Crane of Brookville in 37 seconds at 285.
The Raiders swung the momentum at 103 as Brady Mineweaser was able to pin Cody Stahl in 2:51. The bout was tied at 6-all at the end of the first two minutes.
Trey Constable pinned Ricky Jay Javier in 3:04 at 112. Dustin Dombrowski pinned Trevor Delhunty of Ridgway in 52 seconds at 125 and Brody Zacherl won a 6-0 decision over Dakota Dahler.
Slade Horner picked up a 2-0 overtime decision over Brett Smith in the final bout at 135.
Gerber said he was happy to be a part of the Brookville 50th Anniversary ceremony which took place before the event. He credits Brookville for wrestling a strong dual.
"They were aggressive and did a great job," Gerber said.
Brookville won eight of the 14 matches with six pins and two decisions. Ridgway won four decisions, an injury default and a pin.
Ridgway will wrestle next in the District Team Duals. Ridgway faces either Smethport or Redbank Valley in the class AA semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at DuBois High School. Brookville faces either Port Allegany or Kane in the other semifinal. The final is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
