SHARON – Ridgway wrestling has three wrestlers in the semifinals after the first day at the PIAA Northwest Regional Class AA championships which opened up Friday at Sharon High School.
Corey Bush (126), Kyle Caggiano (160) and Jake Himes are the three who will advance to the regional semifinals. One more win qualifies each of those three for the state tournament next weekend.
Bush advanced to the semifinals in the 126-pound weight class with a 16-0 (3:23) technical fall over Nate Stidham of Hickory. Bush gets to face the D-10 runner-up, Brandon Puckley of Fort LeBoeuf, in the regional semifinal. Puckley enters with a 37-7 record.
Jake Himes had a bye into the quarterfinals and then took on Ian Anthony of Commodore Perry in the quarterfinal. Himes wrestled a steady match and never trailed in a 10-1 major decision. Himes wrestles Craig Cihon of Fort LeBoeuf in the semifinal. Cihon is 42-6 and was the D-10 champion.
Caggiano dominated his prelim bout with a 15-0 technical fall (5:39) over Christian Bock of Girard and then pinned Derrick Caldwell of Langley in the quarterfinal. Caggiano faces Randy Perkins (35-4) of Greenville in the semifinal. Perkins was the District 10 champion at 160 pounds.
In addition to the three semifinalists, Tad Pierce (120), Zac McKnight (132), Steve Mitchell (138) and Slade Horner (145) are in the second round of consolations for the Elkers.
Pierce opened in the 120-pound weight class with a pinfall victory over Adam Borgia of Fort LeBoeuf in the preliminary round. Borgia was sixth at the D-10 championships last weekend.
