Elk County Catholic loses season opener to Brockway

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team opened their season on Monday by hosting the Brockway Rovers at Berwind Park. The Rovers were able to take advantage of seven Elk Catholic errors on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
“After two weeks inside, you have to be ready to play and we weren’t,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. “They took advantage of our mistakes, and that’s what good teams do. Their pitcher kept us off-balance. Thank goodness it’s a long season."
“Hopefully, we’ll be ready to play Wednesday,” he added regarding Elk Catholic’s rescheduled game against DuBois Central on Wednesday at Berwind Park.
The Crusaders had six hits in the contest. Ben Daghir and Brock McCullough both doubled, while Ricky Pearsall had two singles. Luke Daghir and Joe McLaughlin each had singles.
Joe Childs started on the mound for the Crusaders and worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, walking three and striking out four. Pat Brennen worked 3 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out three. Jack Herzing worked one inning of relief, striking out one.
Houston Fairman started on the mound for Brockway and worked six innings, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out six. Nick Anderson worked one inning of relief.
Brockway opened the game with three runs in the top half of the first inning on three hits and an error. The Crusaders went down in order in their half of the inning.
The Rovers left two men stranded in the top of the second inning while the Crusaders went down in order. The top of the third found Brockway scoring three more times on one hit and four errors to take a 6-0 lead. They left the bases loaded. Elk Catholic went down in order in the home half of the inning.
Brockway left a man on base in the top of the fourth inning. In the home half of the inning, Pearsall led off with an infield single. McCullough doubled to left. A single by Luke Daghir scored both Pearsall and McCullough. Ben Daghir followed with a double. Luke Daghir scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jack Herzing. Ben Daghir scored on a sacrifice by McLaughlin, cutting the Brockway lead to 6-4.
The top of the fifth found Brockway scoring another run on two hits and an error. The Crusaders left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.
The Rovers went in order in the sixth, with Elk Catholic leaving a runner stranded. The seventh inning found Brockway leaving a runner on base in the top of the inning. In the home half of the inning, the Crusaders went down in order as the Rovers recorded the 7-4 victory.
Elk Catholic, now 0-1 on the season, will play host to the DuBois Central Cardinals in a game scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at Berwind Park.
