April 13, 2011

Elk Catholic's Lyndsey Trumbull hits a single on this pitch in the first inning of the Lady Crusaders' softball game against the Lady Wolverines of Sheffield Area at the Benzinger Township field.

Taylor Schlimm pitched a one-hitter to open the softball season for the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic on Tuesday afternoon at the Benzinger Township softball field. The Lady Crusaders handed the visiting Sheffield Lady Wolverines a 13-0 setback in a game that was ended after four-and-a-half innings due to the 10-run rule.
Schlimm was the winning pitcher for the Lady Crusaders on Tuesday as she held the Lady Wolverines to just one hit, a second-inning single to right field. Schlimm recorded 10 strikeouts on her way to the victory, while giving up four walks.
P. Moldovan was the losing pitcher for the Lady Wolverines as she gave up eight singles, struck out four and walked 10.
"We're just glad to finally begin our season and get a 'w' in the books," said head coach Joe Coroso following the game. "After some early adjustments, probably due to opening game jitters and the rain, Taylor (Schlimm) got into her rhythm and the team played very well behind her offensively and defensively."
Torie Gradizzi was the leading hitter for the Lady Crusaders with two singles, followed by Hannah McGowan, Jessie McLaughlin, Lyndsey Trumbull, Anna Hawkins, Jenny Cappiello and Jessie Ginther with one single each. McLaughlin, Ginther and Gradizzi each had two RBIs for the Lady Crusaders.
The only hit for the Lady Wolverines was recorded by B. Hoffman.
Sheffield was held scoreless in the first inning, while the Lady Crusaders scored three times in their half of the inning. McGowan and McLaughlin both drew walks and eventually scored on passed balls. Trumbull singled for the first ECCHS hit. She then scored on Cappiello's single.
In the top of the second, the Lady Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs on a single and two walks, but Schlimm then retired the next three batters on strikeouts. In their half of the inning, the Lady Crusaders picked up two more runs when Michelle Imbrogno drew a walk, advanced to second when McGowan's reached first on a fielder's choice. Both scored on McLaughlin's single to make it 5-0.
Sheffield went down in order in the third while the Lady Crusaders scored eight times in their half of the inning. Gradizzi singled to start the rally. Imbrogno, McGowan and McLaughlin all drew walks. Samantha Smith, who was running for Gradizzi, scored on a passed ball, as did Imbrogno and McGowan. McLaughlin scored on an infield out. Hawkins reached first on an error, then Cappiello and Schlimm each drew a walk. Another passed ball allowed Hawkins and Capiello to score on a single by Ginther, then Jena Struble (running for Schlimm) and Ginther scored on a single by Gradizzi to make it 13-0.
Sheffield went down in order in the fourth, while the Lady Crusaders managed singles by McGowan and Hawkins but were also unable to score in the fourth.
Sheffield went down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game at 13-0 due to the 10-run rule. EC's right fielder, Anna Hawkins, robbed Barr of a hit in the fifth inning when she charged Barr's grounder though the right side of the infield and threw her out at first base to end the inning and the game.
Elk Catholic is now 1-0 on the season.
Elk Catholic will return to action this afternoon when they play host to the Johnsonburg Ramettes in a game slated for 4:15 p.m. at Benzinger Park.
