Elk Catholic’s Ben Wortman wins 9-AA singles crown

DuBOIS - Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman captured the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Thursday. Wortman defeated Johnsonburg’s John Paul Allegretto 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.The tournament was held at the DuBois Area High School courts.Wortman reached the finals by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato in the semifinals by a 6-2, 6-1 score. In the quarterfinals, Wortman defeated Johnsonburg’s Mason Martonik, 10-0.Allegretto reached the finals by defeating St. Marys Area’s Michael Fox 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, J.P. defeated Elk Catholic’s Shane Mancuso 10-4.In the first set of the championship match, Wortman opened a 3-0 lead. Allegretto won the fourth game to make the score 3-1. Wortman would win the fourth, fifth and sixth games to win the set 6-1. The second set saw Wortman shut out Allegretto 6-0.“Ben was confident coming in,” said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano. “He has been practicing very hard the last few weeks in preparation for today. He has really been working on his serve and he came in with a little edge. He also played well at the net today.“We knew coming in that J.P. was a tough opponent.
