Elizabeth M. (Betty) Gausman

Elizabeth M. (Betty) Gausman, 90, died Thursday evening, Oct. 4, 2012 at Highland View Nursing Home in Brockway, following an illness of the past nine months.
She was born July 15, 1922 in Carman, daughter of the late Joseph P. and Mary F. Oresko Griech.
Betty grew up in Carman and graduated from Portland Mills School in 1939 and from Ridgway High School, Class of 1940. She worked at the A&P grocery store and at Smith Brothers Department Store before marrying Howard C. Gausman on June 22, 1946 at St. Leo’s Church and starting a family. They celebrated 45 years together before his death on Dec. 11, 1991.
Betty was a devout member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, a 47-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and served with many religious and civic organizations including the St. John of God Society, altar guild, hospital auxiliary, Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She was a past member of the Elk County Historical Society and the Elk County Council of the Arts, having contributed her love of pressing flowers that she used to make greeting cards shared generously with family and friends. One of her later enjoyments was singing with the Sentimental Senior Chorus at the Ridgway Senior Citizens Center. Above all else, it is important to remember her as a loving mother and good friend; well-known for her excellent cooking and baking, especially her homemade bread.
Betty is survived by her children, Stephen H. Gausman and his wife Georgina (DeChano), Allen G. Gausman and his wife Roseanne (Quattrone), Karen E. Yonker and her husband Bill, and Eugene Gausman and his wife Bonnie (Steger), all of Ridgway, George L.Gausman and his wife Mary Kay (Cunningham) of St. Marys, Joseph E. Gausman and his wife Linda (Myers), and Mary D. Teufel and her husband David of Waterford, and Theodore J. Gausman and his wife Laura (Hommel) of Concord, Ohio; 22 grandchildren, Stacey, Erika, Jodie, Andrew, Glenn, Kurt, Matthew, Bethany, Allen Jr., Brian, Gregory, Jennifer, Heidi, Charles, Emily, Mary Anne, Ellen, Holly, Paul, Jessica, Brooke, and Sarah; 18 great-grandchildren, ages 11 years to 11 days; numerous nieces and nephews; and by a special friend, Sophie.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven half brothers and sisters from her father’s first marriage, a half sister, Mary Lesky; seven brothers, John, Peter, Andrew, George, Edward, and Francis Griech, and Thomas Grieggs (nee Griech); and a sister, Julia, who died shortly after birth.
A loyal Catholic all of her life, a Mass of Christian Burial for Elizabeth M. (Betty) Gausman will be celebrated at St. Leo’s Catholic Church on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Brian E. Vossler, pastor of St. Leo’s, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Leo’s Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Leo’s Catholic School, 117 Depot St., Ridgway, or in her memory and spirit, send someone a card.
