Edward C. Zettle

Edward C. Zettle, 73, of 545 Hacker St., Kane, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at Kane Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 10, 1939, in Johnsonburg, he was a son of Clarence E. and Evelyn R. Vasbinder Zettle. On Aug. 5, 2005, in Kane, he married Martha (Buckley) Johnson who survives.
A graduate of Johnsonburg class of 1957, he also attended Penn State University and Purdue University.
Ed served 11 years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War working in the avionics field. He served on the U.S.S. Constitution and the U.S.S. Coral Sea and helped trail the Russian submarines heading towards the states during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 during the Kennedy Administration. He also was a member of the PA National Guard for 13 years.
Although most of his lifelong career was in the electronics and computer building business, he also helped to develop and manage the Elk County Emergency 911 system for 10 years.
He belonged to the Elk County Amateur Radio Association and was a member of the Kane branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
For over 50 years, Ed was a ham radio operator and earned the title “Professor” from his fellow ham colleagues. He enjoyed solving questions from the “Ham” world and the computer world.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Martha, are three children; Renee (Mike) Henry of Luthersburg, Aaron (Kelly) Zettle of Mansfield and Lynelle (Rob) Paro of Jefferson City, Missouri; a brother, David (Charlotte) Zettle of Ridgway; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. with the Rev. David Pflieger, Lutheran Home Chaplain, officiating.
