The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team picked up their first win of the season Monday when they handed the Ridgway Elkers a 13-8 loss at Berwind Park.
The Dutchmen held a slim 5-4 lead over the Elkers heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning. In that at bat, St. Marys scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors to take a 13-4 lead into the seventh inning. The Elkers were able to come up with four runs on three hits and two errors, making the final margin of victory for the Dutch 13-8.
â€śFor six innings we left runners on base, but we hung in there,â€ť said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. â€śGive the guys credit-- they didnâ€™t quit, but they didnâ€™t put them away, either. Things are getting better every day, but it was nice to get that first win under our belt.â€ť
â€śWe have to cut down on the walks,â€ť he added.
The Dutch were led offensively by Branden Tyger with a double and a single. Justin Beimel had two singles, while Quinn Cunningham and Dalton Kline both doubled. Robert Watts, Jerri Newell, Rudy Gleixner and David Aul all singled.
For Ridgway, Jesse Reynolds, Josh Roselli, Josh Mitchell, Ben MacDonald and Ryan McClelland all singled.
â€śWe had our opportunities, but we left the bases loaded two times,â€ť said Ridgway coach Mark Morelli. â€śWeâ€™re our own worst enemy. We didnâ€™t do a very good job on the field (defensively).
â€śWeâ€™ve been hanging around for five or six innings in all our games. Weâ€™re a young team and things are gonna happen until the experience takes over.â€ť
Jerri Newell started on the mound for the Dutch, going three innings and giving up one hit, walking four and striking out seven. Branden Tyger worked five innings, giving up five hits, walking four and striking out five.
Jesse Reynolds started on the mound for Ridgway, going five innings, giving up three hits, walking six and striking out five. Ben MacDonald worked one inning of relief, giving up seven hits, walking one and striking out one.
Reynolds started the game with a single. He moved to second on an error. Josh Roselli and Josh Mitchell both walked. With one out, JoJo Jaques reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, scoring Reynolds. Sam Roselli walked, scoring Josh Roselli as the Elkers left the bases loaded but took the 2-0 lead. With one out in the home half of the first, Kline walked and Branden Tyger reached base on an error, going to second on the play. Robert Watts reached base on an error, scoring Kline. With two outs, Newell walked, forcing in B. Tyger as the Dutch knotted the game at 2-all.
With one out in the top of the second, Reynolds reached base on an error. He moved to second on the play and went to third on a passed ball. He was able to score on a throwing error on the play as the Elkers took the 3-2 lead. St. Marys left one man on base in their half of the inning.
Ridgway left one man on base in the top of the third inning. In the home half of the inning, Watts walked with one out. He stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Vollmer. A single by Newell scored Watts, tying the game at 3-all.
The fourth inning found Ridgway stranding two while St. Marys left one man on base. MacDonald led off the Ridgway fifth with a single. Jaques was hit by a pitch. With two outs, McKnight reached base on an error, scoring courtesy runner Cody Delhunty as the Elkers led 4-3. Beimel led off the home half of the inning with a single. Watts walked and Vollmer reached base on an error, sending Watts to third. Beimel was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on the play. A sacrifice fly to center by Gleixner scored Watts. A single by Aul scored Vollmer, giving St. Marys the 5-4 lead.
Ridgway left the bases loaded in the top half of the sixth. In the home half of the sixth, Cunningham led off with a double. Kline reached base on an error scoring Cunningham. A double by B. Tyger scored Kline. A single by Beimel scored B. Tyger. Watts reached base on an infield single. With one out, Gleixner singled to load the bases. Aul walked to score Beimel. With two outs, Nick Burdick reached base on an error, scoring both Watts and Gleixner. A double by Kline scored both Aul and Burdick, giving the Dutch the 13-4 lead.
In the top half of the seventh, McClelland singled to start the inning. McKnight reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing McClelland. With two outs, Reynolds was hit by a pitch. A single by Josh Roselli scored McKnight. A single by Mitchell scored Reynolds. MacDonald reached base on an error, scoring both Roselli and Mitchell to make the score 13-8. Jaques reached base on an error. A pick-off at first base ended the game with St. Marys on top 13-8.
The Dutch, now 1-2 on the season, return to action Wednesday when they host the Brookville Raiders at 4:15 p.m. at Berwind Park.
The Elkers, now 2-3 on the season, host Johnsonburg Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
