Dornisch wins state shot put crown
Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch successfully defended her PIAA Class AA shot put championship on Saturday by winning the 2011 crown. The PIAA track and field championships were held Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.Megan won the 2011 event with a throw of 44’8”. Aubree Ray of Middletown took second with a throw of 40’1.25”. Dornisch won her 2010 shot put title with a throw of 45’8.25”.Dornisch now has three state championships, two in the shot put and one in the discus, giving Elk County Catholic a total of six state champions in the sport of track and field in the history of the school. Jerry Tucker was the first state champion, winning the discus in 1981. Marty Herbstritt became the second individual champion in 1982 when he won the javelin. Laura Skok was the third individual champion as she won the high jump event in 1992.Dornisch’s teammate Ellie Petrosky just missed medaling in the shot put with a throw of 35’9.5”, good for ninth place.Elk Catholic freshman Kennedy Weisner medaled in two events on Saturday. She placed second in both the 1600 and 800 runs. Her time in the 1600 was 4:59.29, while she ran the 800 in 2:14.95.Also medaling for Elk Catholic was Jared Schaut, who took seventh place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.14 seconds.ECC senior Abbi Petrosky placed seventh in her heat in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.70 seconds. She did not qualify for the finals.The St. Marys Area 4x800 relay team of Megan Barber, Adair Gennocro, Sloan Foster and Shannon Bridges medaled, placing sixth with a time of 9:45.51.Gennocro also medaled in the 3200 run with a time of 11:12.08, good for sixth place.St. Marys Area’s Gideon Woelfel, competing in the AAA meet, finished in 26th place in the 3200 run with a time of 10:13.03.Johnsonburg’s Kiesha Dornish medaled in the AA javelin by placing sixth with a throw of 129’7”.Mike Shuey of Johnsonburg placed 17th in the high jump at a height of 6’.The Lady Crusaders finished in third place in the AA team race with a total of 36 points. West Catholic won the AA girls’ title with 59 points. Trinity won the boys’ AA team title with a total of 42 points. State College won the girls’ AAA team crown with 37 points, edging Abington who finished with 36. Hempfield edged Strath Haven for the boys’ AAA team title, 28-27.
