Crusaders win big over Elkers

October 14, 2011

Tad Pierce turns for possession of the ball along with Ben Herbstritt of Elk County Catholic.

The Elk County Catholic boys soccer team took control early and were dominant in a 9-0 victory over Ridgway Thursday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The game was delayed for a hour because only one referee showed up for the game and the delay was done until a second referee could get to the site. The game started at 5 p.m. and a full 40-minute first half was played but there was only a 3-minute halftime and a 30-minute second half before the game was called due to darkness.
Jacob Herbstritt opened the scoring with 37:41 left in the first half as he broke through the Ridgway defense and buried a shot in the corner. Just over four minutes later, Ben Wortman delivered a well struck ball from about 40 yards out which curled perfectly into the upper left corner and gave ECC a 2-0 lead.
Ridgway had some chances early in the game but could not capitalize. Kyle Jacobs was stopped on a breakout in the ninth minute for Ridgway and there were a couple other scrambles in front of the net that were gathered in.
Herbstritt added his second goal with 17:22 left to put ECC ahead 3-0. Wortman followed with his second tally with 3:44 left and Tyler Anzinger poured in a penalty kick with 2:57 left in the first half as the Crusaders led 5-0 entering the abbreviated halftime.
The offensive onslaught continued for the Crusaders in the second half. Andrew Cotter added a goal with 25:56 left in the second half and Ian Herzing put one in with 19:52 left. Aaron Meier appeared to have scored off a scramble with 9:15 left and Ben Cheatle tallied a goal just before the second half ended to round out the scoring.
Ridgway is slated to host Curwensville at 11 a.m. Saturday for Senior Night. ECC is at Smethport for a 6:30 p.m. start Monday.
