The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team defeated the Ridgway Elkers by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park to take third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament.
The Crusaders, now 9-5 on the season, will play host to the Bradford Owls this afternoon at Berwind Park. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
In Saturdayâ€™s game the Crusaders took the 3-0 lead after three innings, with Ridgway tying the game with one in the fourth and two in the top half of the fifth. Elk Catholic scored the eventual winning run in the home half of the fifth inning.
â€śJoe Childs pitched really well today. He knew coming in that there was no one behind him and he gave us the complete game when we needed it,â€ť said ECCHS coach Tom Zampogna. â€śThe kids came back from last (Friday) nightâ€™s game. We played good enough to win.â€ť
â€śJosh Mitchell pitched well for Ridgway,â€ť added Zampogna.
Joe Childs went the distance on the mound for Elk Catholic, giving up four hits, walking four and striking out six. Josh Mitchell went the distance on the mound for Ridgway, giving up six hits, walking two and striking out 14.
Elk Catholic was led offensively by Jack Herzing with a double and a single and Pat Brennen with two singles. Brock McCullough and Brandon Schlimm also singled.
Ridgway was led offensively by Josh Mitchell with a home run and a single. Ben MacDonald and Evan Nourse each singled.
â€śWhen we hit, we win, and if we donâ€™t hit, we struggle,â€ť said Ridgway coach Mark Morelli. â€śI am not unhappy with the effort today. We just didnâ€™t get a hit when it was called for.â€ť
â€śThese are two even teams. A week ago we beat them 1-0 at our place. They beat us 4-3 today.â€ť said Morelli. â€śJosh Mitchell is our go-to guy. He threw well today but we didnâ€™t execute as well as Elk Catholic did.â€ť
â€śCongratulations goes out to the Johnsonburg Rams for winning the tournament championship,â€ť added Morelli.
The Elkers left a man on base in the top of the first inning. With one out in the home half of the inning, Pat Brennen singled. With two outs, Joe McLaughlin reached base on an error. A single by Jack Herzing scored Brennen, giving ECC the 1-0 lead.
Both teams left one runner stranded in the second inning.
The Elkers went down in order in the top of the third inning. In the home half of the inning, Pat Brennen walked and stole second. With two outs, Herzing doubled, scoring Brennen. Herzing moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by McCullough as Elk Catholic led 3-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Josh Mitchell led off with a walk for Ridgway. He stole second base. With two outs, JoJo Jaques drew a walk and Zac McKnight was hit by a pitch. Mitchell was able to score on an error, cutting the Crusader lead to 3-1. The Crusaders went down in order in the home half of the inning.
An infield single by Evan Nourse started things for Ridgway in the top of the fifth inning. Jesse Reynolds reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing Nourse. Josh Roselli reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing Reynolds. Josh Mitchell homered, scoring Roselli to knot the game at 3-all. In the home half of the inning, Pat Brennen led off with a single and stole second. Ivan Wortman walked and both Brennen and Wortman moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by McLaughlin. Herzing was safe on a fielderâ€™s choice. A sacrifice fly to right by McCullough scored Brennen as ECC took the 4-3 lead.
Ridgway left a runner on base in the top of the sixth inning, while the Crusaders went down in order.
The Elkers went down in order in the top of the seventh as the Crusaders recorded the 4-3 victory.
