Criminal homicide reported at SCI in Forest County

MARIENVILLE – An early-morning attack Wednesday, Aug. 22, in a prison cell at the State Correctional Institution in Forest County resulted in the death of a 63-year-old inmate.
According to reports, Elwood Braswell, a 26-year-old inmate, assaulted another inmate, 63-year-old Frederick Kirkland, beginning at approximately 1:40 a.m. in a cell located at SCI Forest.
Braswell reportedly struck Kirkland with a closed fist, causing the 63-year-old inmate to fall to the floor. After Braswell allegedly stepped on the victim's head, he reportedly placed a pillow on Kirkland's face and sat on the pillow until he stopped moving.
Braswell then reportedly proceeded to tie one end of a bedsheet around Kirkland's neck and secure the sheet to the top of a bunk bed frame. Braswell then picked up the victim and dropped him in an effort to get Kirkland to stop breathing. Braswell then reportedly placed bars of soap into a sock and struck the victim on the head multiple times.
Braswell also reportedly urinated and defecated on Kirkland, who was found deceased at approximately 5:25 a.m. when corrections officers and prison medical personnel were distributing prescription medications to inmates.
