County responds to civil complaint

December 13, 2012

In response to a civil complaint filed Dec. 6 by Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg against the county's board of commissioners, Tom Wagner, county solicitor acting on behalf of the board, has filed a response regarding the issues and has introduced new matters in the case.
A hearing on Krieg's initial complaint will be held Friday, Dec. 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the main courtroom of the Elk County Courthouse.
The initial complaint alleges that the sheriff's department is "underfunded" due to an "increase in workload" and "economic circumstances," and that the board of commissioners is either "unable to or refuse to compensate" the sheriff's department which "may result in the closure" of the office. Krieg, deputies, and administrative staff were working Wednesday but it was unclear when and if they would be compensated for their time with the exception of Krieg, who is required by state constitution to be paid his salary.
