ST. MARYS - The Elk County Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys, officially kicked off their polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thermoform plastic recycling program on Wednesday, holding an open house to educate residents about PET thermoforms as well as other materials that are able to be recycled through the facility.
According to Community Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, PET thermoform plastic is something that "just about everybody runs into."
"It's a clear container mostly, and they are clamshell containers. They have a #1 and the chasing arrow symbol on them," Titchner said.
The Community Recycling Center is part of a national pilot project to encourage PET thermoform recycling, particularly in rural areas.
