ST. MARYS - A new baler that will make recycling efforts easier and more efficient was delivered to the Elk County Community Recycling Center at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys this week.
The main part of the baler was delivered and placed on Tuesday, while the tipper used to load recyclables into the baler arrived on Wednesday.
The baler cost $75,000 and was purchased from Recycling Equipment Corp. by the Elk County Solid Waste Authority through funding from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation. Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner said the new machinery will help the center more effectively provide the bale density and size that companies who take the recyclables prefer. The baler will replace the one that they currently rent from the company JASAR, who also receives the bales to market to companies and industries. Titchner said the rental agreement locked them into having to accept JASAR's rates for the recyclable material, but having their own baler will now allow the authority to explore whether they can get better prices with another company.
"With a new machine like this, we should get better, heavier bales. And since we will not be renting the machine, we can sell to whomever we want. We'll be free to market our material to the highest price," Titchner said.
