The roots of National Day of Prayer dates back to the late 1700s when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.
That tradition has grown strong since colonial times as the local community is set to recognize this year's National Day of Prayer, to be held Thursday, May 1 at noon at the gazebo on the Elk County Courthouse lawn.
One of the event's organizers, Sherry Hoffman, has assisted in the planning of area National Day of Prayer events since the early 1990s in St. Marys. She has since moved to Ridgway and for the past five years has assisted with the National Day of Prayer event in the "Lily of the Valley."
