Charles William 'Bill' Reed, 95, died Aug. 31, 2012 at the Rouse Home of Warren County where he had resided the past nine months.
He was born in Ridgway on July 24, 1917 to the late Ruth Dickey and Rollin Amos Reed.
On June 12, 1948, he married Ruth Anna Eckert who preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2006.
Bill was a lifelong resident of Ridgway graduating from Ridgway High School and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science with a BS degree in Pharmacy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the First Medical Laboratory, working in blood banks in North Africa and throughout Europe. He served on special assignment to Dachau Concentration Camp upon its liberation to help treat survivors of typhus.
Bill was a pharmacist at Cliffe's Pharmacy in Ridgway for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He then worked as a relief pharmacist at the Elk County General Hospital and for several area pharmacies for many years.
He and Ruth loved traveling, particularly to Texas and Williamsburg, Va. They loved spending time with their children and grandchildren, and always enjoyed the company of their Doberman Pinschers. Bill enjoyed stamp collecting, photography, gardening, camping, reading, model railroading and compiling the family genealogy. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgway where he served as a ruling elder among many other capacities. He was a 60-year-member and past president of the Ridgway Lions Club and was a Melvin Jones Fellow, a charter member of the Montmorenci Fire Company where he served as secretary for many years, a life member and past president of the Elk County Historical Society, the Ridgway Library Association, a Master Mason with the Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania, the International Order of Odd Fellows and many other organizations.
He is survived by four children, Marsha (Michael) Keller of Kersey, C. William Reed, Jr. (Alex McIntyre) of Henrietta, N.Y., Donald Reed (Kate) of Warren and Carol Reed of Huntsville, Texas. He is also survived by three grandsons, Michael Keller (Dawn) of Harrisburg, Aaron Keller (Jessie) and Dane Reed of Warren. Also surviving are a brother, J. Franklin Reed (Dorothy) of Newville, Pa. and two sisters Helen Olson (Art) of San Jose, Calif. and Betty Hatfield of Horsehead, N.Y. along with several nieces and nephews and his "other daughter," close friend Noreen Wiegand of Kersey.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings Kathy Cowart, Max Reed and Elizabeth Reed.
A memorial service for Charles William 'Bill' Reed will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 119 Center St., Ridgway, Pa.
