Although the third annual Polar Sweet Express event hosted by CAPSEA, Inc. [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse] is 10 months away, Executive Director Billie Jo Weyant has already begun making plans.
The event, sponsored by Ridgway BiLo and Northwest Savings Bank, is expected to be held in the beginning of February of 2013.
Last year's event held in the Franklin Center in St. Marys raised over $4,500 to assist in supplying abuse victims seeking shelter with basic necessities.
Considering all of the recent funding cuts the organization has had to face, Weyant says events like these are vital.
Due to the success of the last event, Weyant has set her sights on a larger venue for next year.
"We have to find a bigger venue and we won't be doing it again at the Franklin Center," Weyant said. "We have outgrown it."
Aside from the $4,500 raised, CAPSEA received thousands of dollars worth of "wish list" Items donated before, during and after the event.
"We easily doubled what we collected the first year," Weyant said. "We received thousands of items. We have items stored in the attic, the office and the basement was packed full.
"The cash is nice, that goes toward the shelter, too, but the donated items, that is like money for us, too. That's just as good as cash."
"Wish list" items include, but are not limited to, household items, cleaning supplies, paper products, food and gift cards.
