HERSHEY - Corey Bush has himself another state medal but the end to Friday was tough for the Ridgway senior.
After a quarterfinal win, Bush faced the two top wrestlers in the state in consecutive bouts and lost both which puts him in position to wrestle for fifth place at 126 pounds after action concluded at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships for Friday.
Bush started well and opened with a 3-2 quarterfinal win over Jared Watson of Warrior Run. Bush was able to secure a takedown off a restart in the middle of the mat with 1:15 left in the first period to grab the 2-0 advantage. Bush would take that 2-point lead into the second period. Watson won choice and deferred to Bush. Bush would escape early in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0, a point which would prove crucial in the outcome. Watson would make things more interesting with a takedown 30 seconds from the end of the second period to trail by just one entering the third period. Since Watson deferred choice, an escape was all Watson needed to tie the bout. But Bush was able to keep Watson down for the entire third period to secure the 3-2 win and reach the semifinals.
Bush then faced the daunting task of wrestling Jimmy Gulibon of Derry Area in the semifinals. Gulibon is a 3-time state champion and is ranked No. 1 in the nation and he showed why in a 14-4 major decision over Bush. Gulibon was in control throughout the bout and had a 6-1 lead at the end of the first period before continuing to wrestle well and in control en route to the 10-point win.
Bush then had to take on Arty Walsh of Schuylkill Valley, a pre-tournament favorite to make the state final, in the fourth round of consolations and Bush fell behind early again as he lost 16-5.
The championship final, along with the matches for third, fifth and seventh place will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday.
