Last night's lunar view was known as a "blue moon."
If you saw the moon last night, it looked big and beautiful, but not necessarily blue. Although certain atmospheric conditions can cause a moon to appear blue, it is rare. According to a popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month.
The first full moon last month occurred on Aug. 1.
According to www.earthsky.org, a blue moon can also be the third of four full moons in a single season. The site says the last time there were two blue moons in a calendar year was in 1999, when there were two full moons in January, two full moons in March and no full moon at all in February. According to earthsky.org, 2018 is the next time you will be able to view double blue moons.
