The 6th Annual Snow Festival at Bendigo State Park is scheduled for today, Saturday, Feb. 4, and runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. regardless of weather.
Events for the day include the snow box derby, ice fishing demo and more. Instruction to learn to snowshoe or cross country ski will be available, and local scout groups will be selling hot chocolate and hot dogs. Smokey the Bear will be at the festival from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The festival began to allow families to come together and enjoy one of Pennsylvania’s state parks.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity to come out and do things during the winter,” said Holly Dzemyan, Environmental Education Specialist. “We are promoting outdoor recreation and education.”
During the winter months, activities diminish and the snow festival helps to ease the winter blues.
“Everyone is bored by February, and the festival is always a fun time,” said Jason Heasley, Park Manager. “We also wanted to make a connection to the public and let people know that we are still around in the winter.”
The snow box derby is for kids of sled riding age up to 12 years old and requires that kids bring their own box and be assisted by parents.  Regulations include that nothing is to be used on the bottom, and only tape may be used on the sides to help hold the box together. Boxes may be decorated on the sides. Prizes will be given out for longest box slide and most creative design for different ages. In the event of no snow, the snow boxes will be judged on creative design and prizes will be awarded. Snow box derby will begin at 12 p.m., and if there isn’t any snow, judging will be held at 12:30 p.m.
